Suction Aspiration Abortions are the most common pregnancy termination procedure used between 7 and 15 weeks from the last period. 89% of all abortions done are performed using suction aspiration, which is also known as Vacuum Aspiration.

The Procedure

Suction Aspiration Abortions of pregnancies under 12 weeks can often be performed on the same day as the initial appointment and examination. Abortions done beyond 12 weeks are usually performed the day after the initial appointment and exam.

Shortly after conception, the fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterine lining (endometrium). Suction Aspiration uses a straw-like instrument, called a cannula, attached with tubing to a machine that provides light suction. For most pregnancies of less than 12 weeks, the cannula is inserted through the cervical opening and the suction is used to empty the lining of the uterus where the pregnancy is implanted. This usually takes less than two minutes and can be done the same day as the initial appointment.

For abortions performed over 12 weeks and under 15 weeks, the physician inserts a dilator in the cervical opening to slowly dilate the cervix overnight. The procedure is then completed under general anesthesia the following day.

Most women can resume normal activity by the evening of the abortion.

Complications and Side Effects

Following the abortion, women sometimes experience bleeding that can last for 2 weeks. Lingering pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, breast tenderness and fatigue usually disappear after a few days.
